Here are some tips to handle stressed injured or orphaned birds of prey.
- Approach the bird cautiously, if you are too quick you will frighten it and it may try to run or fly off making it impossible to catch. It may then die of its injuries.
- Arm yourself with a large towel or blanket and an appropriately sized box with small air holes in it, ie: a box only slightly larger than the bird itself. Please be very careful as they are powerful birds even when injured. Their feet are extremely strong. As carefully as possible place the towel completely over the bird, push it gently to the ground and gather up the towel and the injured bird placing your hands around the body, facing the feet away from you and place the bird and the towel gently into the box.
- Take it indoors and place the bird in a cool dark quiet place in the house. This minimizes stress and keeps the bird partially confined as the towel hinders it. Please do not wrap the towel tightly around the bird.
- Call your nearest vet center or wildlife carer or us. We use Balcatta vets at 59 Erindale Rd or Vetwest at Carine shopping centre. These vets are used to handling birds of prey and phone us immediately a bird arrives at their center. This gives the bird a good chance of survival and release back into the wild.
